Fine Art and Antique Removals are for paintings, sculpture, antique furniture, clocks, ceramics and other pieces that are valuable, fragile or irreplaceable. They need careful documentation, specialist packing and clear agreement on cover before anything is moved.
- List each piece with its size, material and approximate value.
- Send photos, including any existing damage.
- Say whether a valuation or insurer's requirements apply.
Describe the pieces once and compare quotes from specialist art and antique movers.
Compare Moving QuotesWhat You Can Request
- Condition reports with photographs before packing.
- Soft packing with acid-free tissue, glassine, foam and padded cartons.
- Custom wooden crates for paintings, sculpture and glass.
- Climate-aware transport and storage where available.
- Installation and hanging at the destination, from some providers.
Condition Records
A condition report records each piece's existing marks, cracks, loose joints and frame damage before the move. You and the mover sign it, and it is compared on delivery. Without one, a damage claim is hard to prove.
Specialist Packing and Crating
| Item | Typical protection |
|---|---|
| Framed paintings and prints | Glassine or tissue, corner protectors, padded carton or travel frame; crate for valuable works |
| Unframed canvas | Face never in contact with packing; travel frame or crate |
| Sculpture and ceramics | Foam cavity or custom crate, with the item immobilised |
| Antique furniture | Soft blankets, no tape on finishes, loose parts removed and packed separately |
| Clocks | Pendulum and weights removed and packed separately, often by a clock specialist |
| Mirrors and glass | Taped glass, rigid board and crate, carried upright |
How It Works
- List and photos. You send the inventory and photos.
- Assessment. The mover visits or reviews photos and plans packing.
- Condition report. Each piece is documented before packing.
- Pack and move. Pieces are packed, crated, loaded and secured.
- Delivery check. Each piece is unpacked and checked against the condition report.

Ballpark figures, not quotations. Ranges compiled from price guides published by South African removal companies and quote websites, checked October 2026 and rounded where needed. They are not our prices and no company is bound by them. Condition reports, installation and climate-controlled storage are quoted per job. Published guides vary widely, so treat the ranges as a sanity check only, and confirm whether VAT is included on every quote.

Fine Art and Antique Removals FAQs
Do I need a specialist for antiques?
For valuable or fragile pieces, yes. General removal crews may not have the materials or training, and standard liability may not cover the value.
Is crating necessary?
For valuable paintings, sculpture, large glass and long-distance or international moves, crating gives the best protection.
What is a condition report?
A written and photographed record of each piece's condition before the move, signed by you and the mover.
Will my household insurance cover art in transit?
Not always. Some policies limit or exclude goods in transit or fragile items. Ask your insurer before the move.
Can art be stored?
Yes. Ask about humidity and temperature control, security and how pieces are racked.
