As an example of timing, one UK mover quotes about 4 to 7 weeks door to door for a full container between the UK and South Africa, and about 7 to 11 weeks for groupage. Ask each mover for the estimate on your route.

- A detailed, numbered inventory, which most destinations require for clearance.
- Copies of passports, visas or permits as the destination requires.
- Destination customs forms, such as the UK ToR01 for transfer of residence relief, the Australian B534 personal effects statement, the New Zealand NZCS218 declaration or US CBP Form 3299.
- Export documents handled by the mover's clearing agent. Ask exactly what they need from you.
Destination Requirements
- Australia. Outdoor furniture, braais, bikes, garden tools and shoes must be clean and free of soil. Undeclared risk items on the B534 can lead to prosecution, and timber with borer holes may be treated at your cost.
- United Kingdom. Transfer of residence relief must be applied for on ToR01 before you move. Without relief, duty and VAT can be payable before goods are released.
- New Zealand. Shipments need a detailed inventory and sea containers are inspected.
- Other countries. Rules differ. Check the destination government's customs and biosecurity guidance and ask the mover's destination agent.
Moving back to South Africa? Returning residents who have been abroad for 6 months or more may bring in household effects free of duty and VAT under rebate item 407.06, using SARS forms DA 304 and P1.160 with an inventory. Confirm current rules with SARS.

How long does shipping take?
